What is a cornea?

The cornea is the most-outer layer of the eye. It is clear and dome-shaped. The cornea’s function is to protect the eye from dirt, germs, and other damaging particles. Therefore, it is essential to keep the cornea moist with natural or artificial tears. These tears help flush out debris, heal minor scrapes, and save your eye from inflammation.

Injuries or irritants to the cornea can cause pain, light sensitivity, blurred vision, redness, headaches, fatigue, and even nausea. Common causes are allergies, keratitis, and dry eye syndrome. At Dominion Eye Associates, we will help by identifying the corneal threat and recommending treatment options.

What are my treatment options?

Depending on the cause of your corneal disease, our corneal specialists will make treatment recommendations. Common treatments include corneal transplant surgery, laser surgery, anterior lamellar keratoplasty, endothelial lamellar keratoplasty, and artificial cornea implant. In addition, our ophthalmologists are here to answer any of your questions and discuss your options with you thoroughly.
